How do you decide when to skip a match?

Some weeks I read up on a game for ages and still end up with no real feeling for it. I used to make a pick anyway because I'd put the time in, and those were usually my worst calls. These days I try to just leave those games alone. Do you have a rule for when to pass on a match?
